How to print a printer test page

There are two useful kinds of test: a document printed from your browser, and a report produced by the printer’s own controls or software. They check different parts of the printing process.

Print a test from your browser

  1. Open the printer test tool.
  2. Choose colour, black and white, or alignment.
  3. Select the paper size in your tray, then choose Print test page.
  4. Check the selected printer, portrait orientation and one copy. Use normal quality for the first comparison.
  5. Turn off browser headers and footers. Confirm the preview shows one page before printing.

The browser test travels through your device and driver. If it fails but a printer-generated report works, investigate the document, application, settings or connection before assuming a hardware fault. Microsoft recommends comparing printing from other applications when investigating Edge print problems. See Microsoft’s browser printing guidance.

Print a report from the printer itself

Look up your exact model on the manufacturer’s support site. Follow its instructions for a quality report, nozzle check or diagnostic page. Names and steps vary. A printer-generated report can help distinguish problems in the print mechanism from problems in a browser document.

Save a PDF copy

The tool’s Save as PDF button opens the print dialog. Select the PDF destination offered by your browser or operating system. On a Mac, the Print dialog includes PDF options. See Apple’s print-dialog guide. PDF availability and wording vary by device.

If the dialog does not appear

Try the page in a full browser rather than an embedded app window. If the tool reports an error, use its direct pattern link and your browser’s print command. A mobile device also needs a compatible printer connection; this website cannot add a printer to your operating system.
