Why is my printer printing blank pages?
A blank sheet can start with a blank document, a job-setting problem or an output problem. Work through these comparisons before choosing a maintenance procedure.
1. Inspect the preview
Confirm that the preview actually shows the content you expect and that the selected page range includes it. Check that you selected the intended physical printer rather than a PDF destination. If the preview is blank, try a different file or the printer test tool.
2. Print another document
Use a simple document from a different application. If that works, investigate the original file or application. If both produce blank paper, continue with a test made by the printer itself.
3. Compare a printer-generated page
Follow the manual for your exact model to print a status or diagnostic report. A blank report produced by the printer is a different result from a blank browser job. HP’s blank-page troubleshooting also uses a test page to direct the next steps. See HP’s blank-page guidance.
4. Check recent changes and supply messages
If the problem began after installing a consumable, revisit the manufacturer’s installation steps, including any packaging that must be removed. Check messages on the printer. The correct procedure depends on the cartridge and model; avoid dismantling parts based on a generic checklist.
If the page remains blank
Use the manufacturer’s model-specific support process and record which tests failed. Do not run repeated cleaning cycles without following that guidance. If content appears but is merely pale, use the faded-print guide instead.
Distinguish blank output from an extra blank sheet
First check whether the intended document is missing entirely or whether a correctly printed document is followed by a blank page. These are different situations. For an extra blank sheet, inspect the document’s page count, selected range and page breaks. Compare the preview with the actual output before treating it as an ink or toner issue.
Use the test results to choose the next step
- The preview is blank: verify the selected file and page range. Open the colour printer test page to compare a known pattern.
- The preview has content but the paper is blank: print a simple document from another application, then compare a report generated by the printer.
- Another application works: investigate the original application and job settings.
- The printer’s own report is also blank: record any device messages and use the model-specific support procedure.
What if the printer never feeds paper?
A job that stays in the queue is not the same as a blank printed sheet. Check the printer display, selected device and connection status. Record the error message rather than repeatedly submitting copies. This page addresses blank output; the manufacturer’s connection or queue guidance is more relevant when no sheet emerges.
Prepare a useful support request
Record the model, which applications you tried, whether their previews contained content, and the result of the internal report. Note recent supply changes and any visible warnings. These comparisons help support distinguish the document path from the printer’s output path without guessing which component has failed.
Once marks reappear, use the black-and-white printer test to inspect text, or return to the troubleshooting hub.
