Why is my printer printing lines or streaks?
Lines or streaks describe the appearance of a problem, not its cause. Before running maintenance, check whether the defect repeats across different documents and the printer’s own report.
1. Record what you see
Print one colour test or black-and-white test. Note whether the line is an unprinted gap, an extra mark, or a doubled edge. Note its direction and whether it repeats at similar spacing. Keep the sheet for comparison.
2. Compare a second source
Print a different document from another application. If the issue appears only in one file or app, check that file and its print settings. If it affects several documents, print a quality report using your printer’s controls and the instructions for your model.
3. Use the right maintenance instructions
Inkjet and laser printers use different processes. Do not apply inkjet printhead-cleaning advice to a laser printer. On inkjets, use a nozzle check or cleaning procedure only as directed by the manufacturer. On laser printers, follow the model’s print-quality workflow. HP lists lines, streaks and repeating marks among laser print-quality defects and provides a separate process for those printers. See HP’s monochrome LaserJet print-quality guide.
4. Compare after one change
Changing the document, paper and several settings at once makes it harder to tell what helped. Keep a short note of the change and compare the same pattern afterwards. If a built-in report remains defective, use the manufacturer’s next steps or support service instead of repeatedly running cleaning cycles.
If text has a shadow rather than a missing stripe, compare the alignment pattern. If the whole page is light, use the faded-print checklist.
